People may be surprised to learn that Facebook's highest paid employee is not Mark Zuckerberg. However, with the company's IPO, the fact that Sheryl Sandberg makes the most money came to light.
Facebook's chief operating officer describes herself as the "grownup" at the company, which will probably be reassuring to those people who buy options from the IPO. In 2011, Sheryl Sandberg's total compensation was $30.87 million. That is astonishing, and when the company goes public, she will be one of the wealthiest self-made women in the world. What an accomplishment!
Back in 2008, Mark Zuckerberg actually courted his number one woman at Facebook by taking her out to dinner two times a week for six weeks while she was at Google. How could she say no to persistence like that?
In the nearly four years she's been working at the social network, Sheryl Sandberg is in charge of everything except the product, so she has huge responsibility for the social networking giant, which means she absolutely deserves her salary.
Sandberg is well aware of the fact that women are woefully underrepresented in business and positions of power. To that end, at a commencement address at Barnard College, she said, "We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women's voices are heard and heeded, not overlooked and ignored."
The good thing is she is making headlines, and getting a lot of press now that Facebook is going public. She obviously wants to help not only herself, but also women throughout the world.
