Monday, Ben and Jerry's announced the dropping of the 'All Natural' from its name.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest told the company last month it should not use "all natural" if products contain ingredients that are not natural. The CSPI sent a letter to Unilever, the parent company of Ben & Jerry's, identified products that it said were improperly labeled, according to the Washington Post.
Ben and Jerry's will not change any ingredients but only drop the 'All Natural' from it's name.
"Ben & Jerry's is doing the right thing by taking the phrase 'all natural' off its labels if the products have factory-made ingredients," said Michael F. Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
The Food and Drug Administration does not have any prohibition regarding the use of the term 'natural' but the company no longer wants to battle over the definition of "all natural," which has different meanings to different people, Ben and Jerry's spokesman Sean Greenwood said to the Associated Press.
Some of the flavors included in the list:
Cherry Garcia - a mix of fudge and cherries named after Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia ,contains cocoa processed with alkali.
Creme Brulee - contains maltodextrin, a sweetener produced from cornstarch, and corn syrup.
